River Kocha and the ferry – Pirojpur

River Kocha

The river Kocha is a much larger river from the Southern part of our Bangladesh. It is created when the two famous rivers Modhumoti and the Shondha merged together near at the Hularhat. After converging the two rivers it got a new name Kocha and carrying this new name until it falls into the Bay of Bengal.

Most of the main rivers from our Southern Bangladesh are having bridges on them to ease the communication. But for some unknown reason (as I don’t know) this Kocha river is not having any bridge. And the communication between the Bagerhat or Pirojpur and Barisal is hugely dependent upon this river. One has to wait for around 30 minutes to 2 hours for crossing this river. Whereas a bridge could have reduced this duration into few minutes.

River Kocha

There is only one ferry that is dealing all the transportation. During the first day of our four days tour we had to wait only 20 minutes for the ferry. It was very hot and scorching weather. Most of the time we were sitting inside the car. While crossing the river Kocha we were standing in front of our car and watching the activities from the river. There were quite a few fishing boats in the river. The journey was only for 15-20 minutes. It was probably the 12:00pm of the day.

River Kocha

During the third day of our trip we have encountered the Kocha river again while returning. But this time we were unlucky. We were the last vehicle that couldn’t able to board on that ferry as there wasn’t any space. So that ferry went to the other side, unloaded current vehicles, and later loaded again with new vehicles and returned back to this side. Which means we had to wait more than an hour before boarding. It was early in the morning, probably 10:00am.

River Kocha

In the meantime we have explored the bank of the Kocha river. We had a walk around the streets nearby and explored the bank of the river as well. It was the high tide time probably. The water from the sea was pushing back into the river. There was a palm tree beside the river and lot of abandoned nests of Baya weaver bird were hanging from that tree.

GPS coordinate of the Kocha river and the ferry ghat is around this (22°34’35.51″N, 90° 1’55.49″E).
