Jhalakathi: Kirtipasha Jomidar Bari

Friday, 02 January 2015

Kirtipasha Jomidar Bari (কীর্ত্তিপাশা জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the village Kirtipasha (কীর্ত্তিপাশা) of Jhalokathi district (ঝালকাঠি জেলা). This is probably a century old house. Right now it is abandoned and in a dilapidated condition. For most of the cases only the walls are standing, and the floors or ceilings are disappeared.

The name of the village is after the Jomidar Kirtinarayan Pasha (জমিদার কীর্তি নারায়ণ). And the founder of the Jomidar Bari (জমিদার বাড়ী) was Ramjibon Sen (রামজীবন সেন). Only one of the building from this massive property was in good condition. Right now that one is a part of a girl’s school along with newly built buildings.

It is really a shame that no one is taking any initiative to secure this antique edifice. It seemed like to be collapsed in any moment. In fact it is really risky right now. Even I was also scared of collapsing from the second floor. Roots of tree have crawled everywhere around the walls. I must say that those roots are actually holding the remaining walls.

The Jomidar Bari (জমিদার বাড়ী) premise has a Shiva temple inside. And the remaining of a beautiful temple is also exists these days (only the columns and pillars). We found few exuberant young teenagers there who accompanied us for a while. They have helped us to explore the whole area. Also they have provided lot of information regarding the houses within the limitation of their knowledge.

How to Go:

It is very easy to access Kirtipasha Jomidar Bari (কীর্ত্তিপাশা জমিদার বাড়ী) from Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) district town. You can take a battery driven vehicle (locally known as auto rickshaw) from the Fire Service Mor (ফায়ার সার্ভিস মোড়) that goes for the Kirtipasha (কীর্ত্তিপাশা) village. After that its a walking distance from there. You can ask to the locals if you need any help. GPS coordinate of the Kirtipasha Jomidar Bari (কীর্ত্তিপাশা জমিদার বাড়ী) is (22°40’54.18″N, 90°10’0.57″E).

From Dhaka, there are several launches use to go to Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) and Barisal (বরিশাল). You can use any of those to reach directly at Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি), or you can reach at Barisal (বরিশাল) first, and then go to Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) using local bus service. Launches for Barisal (বরিশাল) are bigger and most luxurious from Bangladesh. And its only 30 minutes of road distance between Barisal (বরিশাল) and Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি).

You can see the floor and ceiling are missing!

Where to Stay:

Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) has several low facilitated hotels around. You can stay on those if you are used to it. Another option will be to stay at Barisal town (বরিশাল টাউন). We have stayed at the Hotel Athena there, a handy one from the Barisal town (বরিশাল টাউন). A single room did cost us 500 Taka (double bed room is 1000-1200 Taka). And the manager of the hotel seemed friendly.

Probably it was a veranda.

It is the inner yard that is covered with jungle.

These are risky for sure.

It is not a jungle, rather its the second floor of the house.

Probably it was a Natmondir (নাটমন্দির)

A stair that leads towards the ground floor.

It is a Shiva temple.

Goddess Shwaraswati (স্বরস্বতী) inside another temple.

It was the day-1 of our four days trip at Southern Bangladesh. We have traveled Barisal (বরিশাল), Jhalokathi (ঝালকাঠি), Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর), Bagerhat (বাগেরহাট), and Khulna (খুলনা) on those days.

in Feb 2018, six of the descendants of the Kirtipasha zamindari (baro hissya branch), including me, visited the house of our ancestors. We got a very warm welcome from the people of the village, as also teachers and students of a Girls school, which runs in the premises. It was a great and memorable experience. Our best wishes are for the teachers and students of the school and all the inhabitants of Kirtipasha.

  5. I have root in this family. My father's childhood was spent here. Thanks from the core of heart for sharing the pictures that I never have seen or may not be able to see even in my life. Thanks also for bringing this great family and their ancestral abode in the knowledge of common people. A great service to restore and preserve the history of Bengal. I would love to have atalk with you. -Sarbani Saha, Kolkata
