Shekhpura mosque is located at the village Shekhpura (may be Sheikh para?). This is an 18th century mosque that was built by a muslim saint named Saiyad Pir Riaj Tulla. Famous poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta used to learn the Persian language here during his childhood. That’s why this mosque has gained a lot of attractions from the tourists and the fans of the poet. After visiting the house of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta, we went to visit this historical Shekhpura mosque. Check the photo gallery of Jessore for more pictures.
Shekhpura mosque is a three dome small sized mosque and very simple in architecture. No terracotta or other byzantine architecture available at the mosque. Each of the domes are in the same sizes and shapes. The mosque has an extended veranda at the eastern side with archway pillars. Basically this is the main difference of this mosque from the other ancient mosques from Bangladesh.
It was afternoon when we reached there. Probably 04:00 pm of the day. Only the eastern side of the mosque had a full view to take any photo. And unfortunately, at that time the sun was torching over the roof of the mosque and falling on the camera lance, and that made all the photos dark.
How to go
Shekhpura mosque is near the house of the poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta. You can come here after visiting the house, or before going there. In either case, you have to come to Keshabpur of Jessore district. You can come here using a hired motorbike the whole way from Jessore town. Or you can use the public bus as transportation. That case you have to come to Keshabpur. It will be around 40 Taka per person. From there you can again take a bus, motor bike, or local tempo to reach near the house of the poet. In total it will be around 60 minutes to 90 minutes of journey that varies based on your selection of vehicle.
For your information, the local people from Jessore town may not be aware about this mosque. But the local people from Keshabpur are well aware about this mosque. I am not sure if the mosque is also known as Sheikh para mosque. The GPS coordinate of this Shekhpura mosque is (22°49’53.74″N, 89°10’3.45″E).
Where to stay
There are few hotels available in Jessore and Khulna. But most of them are not available to book from online. If you want a comfortable hotel then I’d suggest you to stay in Khulna as they have quite a few international quality hotels over there. You can use the below search box to see hotels from Khulna.
