Jhapa baor is another wonderful arc shaped lake (oxbow lake) that is located in Jessore district of Bangladesh. The shape of the baor is almost oval. It just has a mouth on the western side. We visited the Jhapa baor after visiting the Khajura baor. It was just before sunset when we reached there. The whole day it was bright and sunny, but unfortunately didn’t see any sign of the sun that time. We missed the sunset.
Considering the other baor from Jessore district, Jhapa baor has water more or less at every season. Three different types of engine boat service are available as transportation here. One goes to the left, one goes to the right and the other one goes straight at the other side of the lake. We took the straight one, the shortest one to have a boat ride on the Baor. It was 2 Taka per person for crossing the Baor. The name Jhapa came from the village name which is now inside the arc of the Baor.
The sun was gone, the sky was blue and the water was tranquil. Jhapa Baor appeared as a mirror in front of us where we enjoyed the reflection of the sky. This is an unique view which is only available at the baor of Bangladesh. We had a short visit around Jhapa baor and it didn’t soothe our thirst enough. A 2-3 hours of visit on this baor could do that as I believe. Check the photo gallery of Jessore for more pictures.
About a Baor
A Baor is an arc shaped lake that is formed at a bend/turn of a river/canal (which is also known as oxbow lake). Basically the river has been dead/changed its course for several decades. But the water at the bend of the river is still prominent. So it just turned into a lake and had a shape. The length of the arc can be 10% to 95% of the circle. But never a complete circle. More about a Baor can be found at Banglapedia.
