Rose Garden Palace – Dhaka

rose garden palace, dhaka

Rose Garden Palace is a white colored palace that looks like a wax palace when looked from far. It’s very beautiful and nice looking. This building was originally built by a Hindu zamidar somewhere around 1900. But later on handed over to several people. Since 2018 Bangladesh government owns this place.

Rose Garden Palace was a privately owned beautiful mansion that is located at the Tikatuli of Dhaka. Despite of a private property, it is still possible to view the glimpse of the edifice from the outside. Specially at the other side of the pond, from nearby buildings, etc. I observed the building from the outside (through the grilled wall).

This rose garden palace was known as “Humayun Shaheber Bari” at that area. But later on the building is owned by someone Rashid, and he had renamed the building as “Rashid Manzil“, but still people use to call it as “Humayun Shaheber Bari“. You can read more about when and who built this beautiful mansion from wikipedia.

This magnificent building was built during the early 1900. It has completely Mughal decoration. The Minaret at the top of the building, the columns of the building, and the window style everything supports the Mughal style. In front of the building there has a small pond

There are several white stylish statues are placed inside the palace premise. It looks like those were made by marble. The statues are Greek styled. Cause those were wearing gown or long skirt which my country women doesn’t use to wear (specially that time).

How to Go:

Rose Garden Palace is located at the Shamibag of Dhaka. If you are not familiar about the location then best option is to take the rickshaw from the Motijheel. It should take around 15-20 minutes from there. Ask the Rickshaw puller about “Humayun Shaheber Bari” or Rashid manjil if they don’t recognize the English name Rose Garden Palace. GPS coordinate of the location is (23°43’06.0″N, 90°25’34.2″E).

Note:

It was a private property before when anyone would required permission to access it. But in 2018 the government purchased the property to turn it into a museum, which is really a good news. It will be much helpful for the people explore it.

  11. In contradiction of the content written above, the Rose Garden was the pleasure palace (natch ghaur) built by a Hindu zamindar during the early part of the nineteenth century. Later a Muslim family bought it and added a few bedrooms. The property was inherited by the two older sons of the new owner. The original palace remained in the custody of the younger of the two brothers (Rashid and Rana's father). For many years, the family of the youngest brother (3rd son)lived there. All the children were born there. Humayun Bashir who fathered twelve children, built a mansion across the pond, just to the right of the entrance gate of the Rose Garden. Originally, the long driveway was flanked by statues but most were removed because of the objection of Rashid's mother. I believe that originally the staircase was a musical one, i.e. whenever one climbed it, music would play. This was a trend of the times as other palaces of the era also featured this. I used to be a frequent visitor there since my cousins, children of the third son, lived there for many years.
