It was totally bright through out the whole day. But all of a sudden the weather has changed and started raining (not a heavy one though). We were using a rented car with us, and it was around 4:20pm of the day. So we have decided to visit the Ojoddhar Moth (অযোধ্যার মঠ) which is around 10 kilometer (or more) apart from the Bagerhat town (বাগেরহাট টাউন). We had the car with us, had the GPS coordinate as well. So we had nothing to worry about the rain, or any other uncertainties. It just took around 20-25 minutes to reach near the Moth. The rain was still persistent and I couldn’t use my regular camera. All the photos were taken using the cellphone camera.
This is a Hindu Moth (though it doesn’t look like a regular Hindu temple) locally known as Kodola Moth (কোদলা মঠ) as it is located at the village Kodola (কোদলা গ্রাম). It has another name Ojodhdhar Moth (অযোধ্যার মঠ). May be the correct spelling can be Ayodhyar Moth (অযোধ্যার মঠ). It is a tall structure that has a square shaped base. Approximate height of the Moth is slightly above the 18 meter.
It has three gates at the three sides. Outer wall is totally covered with the burnt soils (or bricks) and designed as horizontal parallel lines. Each of such horizontal lines are having a foot distance in between and those are found from top to the bottom of the structure. I have found 2/3 very small terracotta on the outer side of the walls. One was probably a shape of an elephant.
It is totally unknown these days about the builder of this Moth. It had a nearly destroyed inscription around it whose meaning is still unsolved these days. Scholar people are guessing this as an edifice of 16th or 17th century. I have visited a similar one from Faridpur (ফরিদপুর) named Mothurapur Deul before.
It was getting darker slowly, and the rain stopped finally. We have returned back to the Khulna town and stayed there for the second night at Hotel Royal. During the night it had a rain like our regular rainy season. The roads from Khulna town (খুলনা টাউন) went under water for a while. I have enjoyed the rain from the window of my hotel room.
How to Go:
I have used a rented car during this traveling. So not sure about the public transportation. May be to go there you can hire a battery driven vehicles for the round trip. Another option can be to reach at the Jatrapur Bazar (যাত্রাপুর বাজার) first. And from there take another vehicle or van to reach at the Kodola Moth (কোদলা মঠ).
GPS coordinate of the Jatrapur Bazar (যাত্রাপুর বাজার) is (22°42’58.51″N, 89°45’37.23″E). And the GPS coordinate of the Kodola Moth (কোদলা মঠ) is (22°44’31.14″N, 89°46’21.38″E). For your information, the condition of the road is good in these days. It was smooth when I have used that.
It was the day-2 of our four days trip at Southern Bangladesh. We have traveled Barisal (বরিশাল), Jhalokathi (ঝালকাঠি), Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর), Bagerhat (বাগেরহাট), and Khulna (খুলনা) in those days.
