The great Baliati Jomidar (or Zomidar) Bari is located in the Saturia Upozila of Manikganj district, Bangladesh. Name of the village is Baliati. This archaeological building is about 200 years of old. A river named Gazikhali which is demised interim of the time, flowed at the northern side of the palace.
Actually I was tired of traveling long distance at past few weekends. So I didn’t make any tour plan for this weekend. But suddenly in morning I have decided to visit the exotic Baliati Jomidar Bari at Manikganj. It is too near from the Dhaka town, but I didn’t make my time to give a visit before.
The whole premise is a huge one (approximately 16000 square meter). There are possibly 200 rooms available inside the premise. Back side of the palace has a pond having four ghats. Other side of the pond has a series of sanitary lavatory.
Gobinda Ram Shaha was the settler of the Zomidari at Baliati. He was a salt merchant. His forefather was poor and started small business. Later he owned that from his parent. Then he extended that business further and established Zomidari.
Original name was Baliati, but after converting into English, then name transgressed into Baliati. This Jamidar family helped in education sector greatly. Dhaka Jogonnath University was established by them as well as the Jogonnath Hall of Dhaka University.
All the buildings from the premise were not built at the same time. Those buildings were built at different times by different persons from the ruler’s family. Most of the buildings are having a touch of Greek-Roman style, for example the pillars, roof, etc.
RP Shaha, a Magnanimous munificent person of Tangail is one of my idol. He has married Kiran Bala, a woman from this Baliati Zomidar family. That philanthropic man wanted to build a hospital at Baliati, but didn’t get permission. He later built that hospital at his own town.
Baliati Jomidar bari is a large complex where you’d find several old buildings are having numerous rooms inside. Few of the places would give you a mysterious feeling due to the natural lights. Lot of photographers use to visit this Jomidar bari very frequently. Being very close to Dhaka this is an ideal place for a day trip with friends, family, or as solo.
How to go:
There are several ways to reach at Baliati Jomidar bari.
1. First you have to go to Saturia. GPS of Saturia is (23°58’15.66″N, 90° 2’14.90″E).
** A bus from Gabtoli is available for Dhaka-Saturia route. You can take that one for 60 Taka. It will require you around 2 hours to go to Saturia.
** Or take a bus of Dhaka-Manikganj route from Gabtoli, or Dhaka-Paturia service of BRTC bus from Gulistan. Bus fare is 70 Taka. After 1.5 hour get-off from the bus at Kalampur Bus Stand. GPS of Kalampur is (23°55’4.52″N, 90° 9’16.16″E). From there take a bus of Saturia. Bus fare is 20 Taka and would require 20 minutes.
2. Using a rickshaw for 20 Taka from Saturia bazaar you could easily go to the Baliati Jomidar Bari. GPS of the Baliati Jomidar bari is (23°59’40.79″N, 90° 2’32.72″E).
Where to Stay:
You can go there and come back within the same day. So accommodation is not mandatory. There is a picnic spot named Nahar Garden near the Jomidar Bari. Possibly they have an accommodation facility (I am not sure though). If you wish to stay in Dhaka then here are the list of hotels for you.
Where to Eat:
As this archaeological palace became a popular tourist spot recently you’d find several restaurants in front of the Baliati Jomidar bari for lunch.
Opening time of Baliati Jomidar Bari:
Sunday is the weekly day off and the Monday is the half day of (in morning). Also during every day they have half an hour of lunch break. During Friday the break is a bit longer (2 hours I guess) because of the prayer. During the government public holidays Baliati Jomidar bari also remains closed. So before going there check your time.
