It was our last place to visit for this whole four day’s trip. We have moved there after visiting the Durga Shagor Dighi. And still we were with our battery driven auto rickshaw (hired for hourly payment). It was around 3:30 pm of the day. The road condition wasn’t good as we have picked the wrong route. That’s why we have walked for a while to avoid the immense jerking.
This Jomidar bari (জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the village Lakhutia (লাখুটিয়া), also pronounced as Lakutia (লাকুটিয়া). The Jomidari (জমিদারী) was established by the Rupchondro Ray (রূপচন্দ্র রায়). But the further expansion was made by Rajchondro Ray (রাজচন্দ্র রায়) who was a grand son of him, and he is the builder of this famous Lakhutia Jomidar Bari (লাখুটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী).
The main building is a two stored building which is still currently standing, but its rooms are not in a usable condition these days as all the windows are missing. The design, style, and the architecture is very simple. From my observation, this can be an edifice of 60/70 years old.
Apart from the main building, the premise has several Shiva temples in a row at the Western side. Those are also in a ruin and currently not functional for prayer.
At the Eastern side of the building it has several moth (মঠ). Those are some small small buildings. At one of those it has an inscription. One of the decedent from this famous family named Ponkoj Kumar Ray Choudhuri (পঙ্কজ কুমার রায় চৌধুরী) has built this moth (মঠ) to commemorate his mother and father. The date is written 15 August 2001. He is currently living in Sydney, Australia.
The whole premise is currently under the boundary of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). I have seen few farming activities on there at nearby fields. They use to keep their accessories inside the decaying Jomidar Bari (জমিদার বাড়ী).
How to go:
Best will be if you can go there with a reserved vehicle with you. For example a battery driven auto rickshaw. This place is just around 8 kilometer from the Barisal town. Alternately you can take the public transport service from the Nothullabad (নথুল্লাবাদ) bus stoppage. Your destination will be Babu bazar (বাবু বাজার) bus stoppage. From there its a 2 minutes of walking distance. GPS coordinate of the Lakhutia Jomidar Bari (লাখুটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী) is (22°45’44.69″N, 90°19’48.21″E).
Where to stay:
We have stayed at the Hotel Athena, a handy one from the Barisal town (বরিশাল টাউন). A single room did cost us 500 Taka (double bed room is 1000-1200 Taka). And the manager of the hotel seemed friendly.
It was the day-4 of our four days trip at Southern Bangladesh. We have traveled Barisal (বরিশাল), Jhalokathi (ঝালকাঠি), Pirojpur (পিরোজপুর), Bagerhat (বাগেরহাট), and Khulna (খুলনা) on those days.
