Visiting Bhoirob Bridge During Night

Friday, 05 October 2012

Bhoirob bridge(ভৈরব ব্রিজ, also known as “Saiyad Nazrul Islam Bridge”(সৈয়দ নজরুল ইসলাম সেতু)) situated over the river Meghna(মেঘনা নদী). It is a connection between the Upozila Bhoirob of Kishoreganj(ভৈরব, কিশোরগঞ্জ), and the industrial area Ashuganj of Brahmanbaria(আশুগঞ্জ, ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া) district. Construction of the bridge was started during 1999 and finished during 2002. The total length of the bridge is slight less than a kilometer. There are two adjacent bridges over there, one for the train, and other one for the highway buses and other vehicles.

While traveling the Sylhet(সিলেট) and it’s proximity area, I had to cross this bridge several times. But never had a chance to visit the bridge and walk over it. This time, during our Brahmanbaria(ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া) tour, we had a plan to visit it and enjoy the sunset from the bridge. But unfortunately we were late for some unavoidable reasons. And couldn’t reach near to the bridge before sunset.

After the sunset, we have reached at the Southern bank of the river. We used a CNG auto rickshaw which did cost us 25 Taka each. It was a short ride from the Bishwa Road Mor(বিশ্বরোড মোড়). After crossing the toll plaza, we have left the vehicle and started walking. The breeze was gentle and invigorating. Despite of the night, the ambient of the bridge was enthralling too.

We were walking slowly. Lot of other pedestrians were passing us. Most of them were basically poor people. Very few were local tourists from the towns near the bridge. And extremely(or none) few were like us over there. Being at the Friday night, the volume of traffic was slight few. The bridge slightly vibrates when any heavy vehicle pass on it.

Beside this concrete made bridge, another one is available. That is built from solid iron and amusingly capable to carry a train. That bridge is older, and made many years back, but still standing firm. We have seen several trains just crossed that bridge during our visiting.

After reaching at the other side of the bridge, we have decided to explore the bank of the river. Its actually a park like things below the bridge. A stairs directly went to the base of the bridge from top. Lot of local tourists use to wander that area during afternoon. Still there were few even at the evening.

Bank of the river is covered with stones to avoid any collapse. Its a nice place to sit for a while and enjoy the viable waves from the river and feel the wind around. But it was almost near 7:00 that time, and we were in a hurry. Also we didn’t know what happens here at darkness. So we couldn’t prolong our staying there any further.

After another short walk from the bank of the river, we have reached at the Bus stand and jumped inside a bus of Dhaka without any tickets. There were other people who did the same. The situation was slightly chaotic when the awaiting passengers from counter entered inside the bus. They found their seats were occupied by the others like us who didn’t have any tickets. Later this problem was solved by the ticket master from the counter by providing us a valid ticket. It was only possible for Friday night, as less crowd on the highway.
