Glenmacnass waterfall is another popular tourist spot which is located in wicklow mountain. This magnificent waterfall is created as the river Glenmacnass had a drop at the head of the Glenmacnass valley. This waterfall is located at the middle of Sally Gap and Laragh, and approximately a 50 kilometer drive from the Dublin city.
The height of the Glenmacnass waterfall is approximately 80 meter. Being located beside the road, it is very easy to observe from the roadside. The view of the Glenmacnass valley from the top of the waterfall is picturesque. As the river doesn’t produce too much water, the flow in waterfall is less.
During summer we use to go there often. We sit beside the riverbank and put our feet in cold water of the river. In a sunny summer day lot of visitors use to gather here. The upper part of the river of the waterfall is open for public access. River bank has some lovely grasses to put your blanket for a sunbath. Many parents bring their kids so that they could play around. The valley beneath the waterfall is not publicly accessible. But you can always enjoy it from the top.
There has a popular trail towards Tonelagee that starts and finishes near from the waterfall. Along with magnificent views of wicklow mountains this trail also leads near to the romantic heart shaped lake named Lough Ouler. If you are in a tight schedule then spending half an hour near the waterfall is enough. But if you have time then you might consider walking on the trail.
It has a quite big parking space beside the Glenmacnass waterfall. And most of the visitors come here either going towards Laragh or coming back from there. And most of them pay a quick visit. That’s why it is easy to get a free spot as someone is already leaving. To go there from Dublin city you might want to take the road R115 (which is also known as Old Military Road). This road is a nice drive through the wicklow mountain. The road is a bit narrow, but if you drive carefully it won’t be a problem.
Caution: It is not a good idea to go near the top of the waterfall. It could be slippery to cause a fall. The large rocks in river could be slippery too. Take extra care while leaping from one rock to another.
