Shoshi Lodge – Mymensingh

Shoshi Lodge. Mymensingh

Shoshi lodge is a luxurious Jamidar house located in the Mymensingh town. Initially (approximately 150 years back) this massive house was built by the Jomidar SurjoKanto of Muktagachha. He had an adopted son named ShoshiKanto. The king named this lodge after him. Shoshikanto was the last inheritor of that ruler family. The architecture of the lodge has a touch of Europe. A statue of Greek goddess Venus was installed in front of the palace which was built using marble stone.

After the initial construction, this Shoshi lodge was dislodged by the massive earthquake of 1897. During that earthquake a lot of Jomidar bari from Bangladesh got damaged (i.e. Rani Bhobani Rajbari). This lodge wasn’t an exception from that natural calamity. Later ShoshiKanto himself installed the current structure at the same place. During that process he imported the raw materials from Italy and the other parts of Europe.

In current days this premise is serving as the Women Teacher’s Training College. That’s why the building is in good condition. If anyone wants to visit this place, Friday and Saturday would be the best day of the week. During the working day anyone might find official activities are in progress.

It was on our way to Birisiri. After refuelling the car from Mymensingh town, we decided to visit this Luxurious lodge. We spent approximately half an hour around the premise. As we didn’t have that much time to explore the place, we missed the pond behind the house and the great Cannonball tree. The fruit from that old tree was used to feed the elephants that belonged to the Jomidar. I have a plan to explore the Mymensingh district, and that time I’ll explore this old mansion once again.

How to Go

Shoshi lodge is located at the heart of the Mymensingh town. You could easily go using a rickshaw or a short walk. This old house is currently being used as the Women Teachers Training College. Friday/Saturday is the best time to visit as regular day-to-day working is close on weekends. GPS coordinate of this antique house is (24°45’43.63″N, 90°24’11.67″E). It is near the Boro bazar area. Ask anyone for the location of Mohila TT college if you need any help for directions.
