Phoenix park is the largest enclosed park in Ireland. Even not only in Ireland, this is the largest in any European capital city. The area of the park is 707 hectares (whereas the perimeter is 11 kilometer). This recreational park attracts lot of tourists and local people every year. Most of the local people go there to pass a good afternoon time, or for jogging.
The Phoenix park has several monuments scattered. One of those monuments is the Wellington monument. This 200ft tall obelisk monument is to commemorate the victories of Duke of Wellington. Being closer to the park gate most of the tourists use to gather here. Specially during a summer time you’d see plenty of visitors are laying on grass. See here for other things to see in Phoenix park.
Being a vast park the best way to explore the park is by car or bike. There is a rent-a-bike store at the phoenix park gate. You can hire the bike from there for a day or hourly basis. This bike would allow you to go to almost everywhere in park. You can use a car too, but you won’t have that much flexibility.
During the summer time lot of people come to phoenix park to play sports like cricket, football, etc. This park is a nice start for a learner driver. I’ve learned my first driving in this park. The park has a herd of deers. They mostly graze on the field in a group. It is nice to see a vast number of deers in an open park like this. There are several small ponds available inside the phoenix park. You’d see plenty of birds (specially ducks) there. Lot of people do bird feeding there.
Dublin zoo is technically inside the premise of Phoenix park. So if you have plan you can visit both the places at the same time. Besides, there are lot of events suppose to happen in Phoenix park all around the year. Keep eye on the Dublin’s event.
Having long day during summer, most of the people prefer to visit the park during that time. But in my opinion the park looks most beautiful during autumn or early winter (November). Though it will be much colder that time but you’d see plenty of colors that time. If you want to see some colorful trees around Dublin then this phoenix park would be a nice place to go.
