Risang is a popular waterfall which is probably the most visited attraction from Khagrachari district. Though most of the tourists visit the upper Risang waterfall, they are not aware of the lower one. Last time I visited the upper Risang Waterfall and wasn’t able to locate the Lower waterfall. So this time our mission was Find the lower Risang waterfall. The stream from the waterfall falls into the river Chengi.
Once again it was amid the rainy season during July. After a short stroll over the brick-road, we started walking beside a stream. This stream actually carries the water from Risang waterfall. Which is also known as RIsang jhiri. It was around 10am in the morning. We were walking over the stream of the waterfall but unable to find the second waterfall. The weather was mysterious as it was experimenting with its states so frequently. We walked around 5 hours over the Jhiri, but were unable to find any trace of the lower Resung waterfall.
The Jhiri was wide enough. Approximately 30 feet at some point. But the depth of water wasn’t too much. Also the flow wasn’t not that strong. We were walking with the flow. It was very easy walking over the water of the stream. At some point we chose to pick a narrow stream that was falling into this Risang jhiri. We walked through that one for a while and at one point it got much narrower. So we decided to come back to the mainstream. After that it started raining heavily. So we were slightly nervous about the flash flood as both sides of the river were high. Besides, we rarely saw any people around there. As we’ve already spent around 5 hours, we decided to return back by giving any hope to find it.
Several Tripura tribesmen were crossing us and we asked them about the waterfall. All of them were reluctant to respond. In fact, they were only mentioning about the first waterfall and rejected the existence of the other one.
There were several reasons for failing to find the second waterfall. As it was the rainy season, at one place the Jhiri depth got much higher. So we skipped that portion, and unfortunately the waterfall was near to that place. Also from the very first move, we deteriorated into a wrong path, so explored the wrong proximity for the waterfall.
But that failed exploration wasn’t that bad at the end of the day. As we know the Jhiri of the hilly area is most exciting during the rainy season, so a lot of mini waterfalls and mysterious places were available around the Jhiri. At some places there weren’t any sunlights. We didn’t see too many birds, but saw a lot of wild flowers. For example Dwarf Ophiorrhiza (Ophiorrhiza harrisiana)
So if you visit the Risang waterfall next time, don’t waste all your time around the waterfall. Keep some time to explore the Jhiri. It is a wonderful trail and much easy to walk.
