Jagodbondhu Sree Angon – Faridpur

Sree Angan, Faridpur

Sree Angan (or Sri Angan) is a Hindu asram that is located in Goalchamat of Faridpur town. It was established by Prabhu Jagadbandhu who was a Hindu saint. It was established during the Roth Jatra festival of Ashar 1306 of Bengali calendar. The land for the Angon was donated by Sreeram Sundar and Sreeram Kumarmudi. Currently it is the headquarters of Mahanam Sampraday. During the war of 1971 the belligerent Pakistani army killed eight of the monks while they were doing their prayer.

This place is located between the old bus stand and the new bus stand. If you are going from the old bus stand to the new one then the Angon (as local people say this) would be on the left hand side of you. If you are from the new bus stand, in that case it would be on the right hand side. Hope you won’t miss the place now.

This is known as Nouka Mondir (boat temple).

Everyday a lot of devotees visit this place. For them the Angon has a facility to provide accommodation. It has around 30 rooms that could take 150 devotees for a day. This Sree Angon is a specious area, and there are several prayer halls around it. Actually I don’t have that much idea about the Hindu religion (specially when it comes to prayer). If you enter the prayer halls you would have to take your shoes off. Also inside the Angon area you are not allowed to enter by riding a bike.

Depicting Prabhu Jagadbandhu on a jaunting boat in river Padma with his followers.

Most interesting thing from the Sree Angon premise was the Nouka Mondir (an English boat temple). I have never heard of anything like that before. Inside the temple a boat is placed. The founder Jagadbondhu used to go for a jaunt in river Padma with his followers, and returned back during the last part of the night. I think this is the reason for the name of the temple. That time the Angon area had water around it and it was connected to the river Kumar which is connected to river Padma.

A Roth (chariot).

Beside the Nouka mondir I found a Roth (chariot) placed inside a building. The chariot was completely made from wood. This does not look like a giant one, only a medium one. During the Roth jatra in Ashar of Bangla calendar this used to be exhibited for the people.

Sree Angan is a calm and quiet place, no chaos from the outside life. If you pass some time inside the premise it would simply please your mind. This place is a wonderful attraction from the Faridpur district.
