St Francis Xavier’s Girls High School is one of the best schools for the girls from Old Dhaka, Bangladesh. This one is located in Laxmi bazar, just beside the St Gregory’s school. This school was established in 1912 and that time it was an English medium school. After the liberation war of 1971 it became a Bengali medium school. Initially this school was under the same board of the Gregory’s school, but later on the board was separated and now controlled by a different authority.
Since it is a girls school the entry for the school is restricted. That’s why it wasn’t in my visit list for this Old Dhaka expedition. But from a shopkeeper I came to know that it used to remain close in Saturday as weekend. So I took my chance as it was off, and I entered the school to visit.
There are two main buildings inside the school premise. One is ‘U’ shaped. Half of that building uses for the kindergarten students, and rest of it is girl’s hostel (I think). The classroom building is ‘L’ shaped and this one was built in 1993. This white colored building looks nice and it has a basketball ground in front of it.
There is a small garden inside the St Francis School premise. You could easily find a statue of mother Merry who is holding the earth. This garden is profound with several flower plants and small fruit trees. Also at the other end of the ground you’d find a flat labyrinth which is nicely decorated. The playground for the students is a bit smaller. Also one corner of the playground contains several instruments for the kids, like the seesaw, slipper, etc.
There is a small two stored building inside the school premise which almost looks like the brother house of the St Gregory’s school. Later on I came to know that it uses to keep the exam papers and other stuffs. I think it’s kind of a store house.
