World War II Cemetery in Chittagong

Bangladesh has two Cemeteries for World War II. One is at Chittagong, and another is at Comilla. It’s a bit hard to find the place. Because you have to take an Auto Rickshaw to reach there. And most of the drivers don’t know this place as Cemetery. You have to tell them that you would like to go to the graveyard of Christian People. The exact location of the Cemetery is at “19 Badsha Mia Chowdhury Road“. It will take 30-40 Taka Auto rickshaw fare. If you are outside from Chittagong then you can reach Chittagong by Bus, Train or Air.

From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, more about War Cemetery of Chittagong: Chittagong War Cemetery is in Dampara locality, No 19 Badsha Mia Chowdhury Road, 22 kilometres north of the airport and 8 kilometres from the port on a site which was formerly paddy fields, but which has now been developed. It is near the arts college and close by Finlay’s Guest Houses near Chatteshanry Road; a well known road leading to the Hindu Kali Bari Temple. There is no C.W.G.C. road direction sign. The Burial area is situated at the bottom of a slope directly behind Finlay’s Guest Houses and is surrounded by a large area planted with a mixture of jungle trees, fruit trees and flowering trees. It is not easily seen from the road.

This Cemetery has 755 graves inside. Few of those are unidentified. Below is the list of soldiers from different countries. Also there is a book inside the Cemetery where you’ll find the name of 6000 sailors who have sacrificed their life at Bay of Bengal, and they had no grave but the sea.

Opening and Closing time

The Cemetery is open from morning 7:00am to 12:00pm, and from afternoon 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Without this timing, you cannot enter the cemetery, no matter who you are. So be careful about the timing. Otherwise you might get disheartened.
